HOMEWORK
PURPOSES
PSHE homework allows pupils the opportunity to: -- Work independently
- Practise planning and organising their time
- Research information using a variety of sources
- Practise skills learned in class
- Use the knowledge that they have gained in class
- Show the teacher that they have understood what they have done in class
- Express their views and opinions
- Collect together evidence to help them recorod their achievements
- Prepare for post-16 options.
FREQUENCY – Key Stage 3
Whilst PSHE is on the homework timetable it will not necessarily be set each time that it appears. This is because the nature of the subject means that it is not always appropriate to set work to be done outside of the classroom. The pupils understand, however, that it will be set as and when the topic / module requires it. This will be more frequent during some topics than others. The set task should take up to 30 minutes to complete.
FREQUENCY – Key Stage 4
PSHE does not appear on the homework timetable. This is because the nature of the subject means that it is not appropriate to set homework on a regular basis. The pupils understand, however that it will be set as and when the topic / module requires it. Therefore, it is likely that homework will be set, on average, every three to four weeks and the task will take between 35 to 45 minutes to complete. However, due to the quantity of coursework and the preparation for GCSE examinations, it is likely that homework for Year 11 will only be set during the Autumn term.
The type of task set in Years 7, 8 and 9 reflects the purpose of issuing PSHE homework. Examples of specific tasks that pupils could expect to receive include:
- Discussing a topic with their family and then producing a written passage recording the results of the discussion
- Gathering and presenting information for their Record of Achievement folders
- Researching information for a class presentation
- Producing a poster to reflect their understanding of a particular issue e.g. advice on how to deal with incidents of bullying or the dangers surrounding young people smoking
- Producing a poem or piece of creative writing as a means of expressing a personal view point
- Using the careers library to research information about a specific job
Examples of tasks that pupils could expect to receive in Years 10 and 11:
- Writing a letter of application for a work experience placement
- Gathering and presenting information for their National Record of Achievement
- Researching information for a class presentation
- Producing a poem or piece of creative writing as a means of expressing a personal view point
- Using the careers library to research post-16 option choices
WHAT PARENTS AND PUPILS CAN EXPECT FROM US:
- That the tasks set will be appropriate to the range of abilities
- Homework will be marked regularly and feedback to pupils will include a general comment and / or target for future improvement
- A specific deadline will be given for the task to be completedst-16 option choices
WHAT WE EXPECT FROM PUPILS:
- They make every effort to complete the task to the best of their ability
- They meet the deadline set for the task
- If they are experiencing difficulty, they ask for help or visit the Study Club
- They act upon the comments and/or target given when the homework is marked.
