The Creative Arts Department
“The Creative Arts should have a place for all pupils: they should experience the satisfaction of designing and creating a variety of media. Music, Drama, Art and literature should be present in the passive sense of being aware of human achievement and in the active sense of participation”
The Derbyshire Approach to the Curriculum
The Creative Arts Department consists of Art, Music and Drama.
There are currently four art teachers working both full time and part-time with one full time and two part-time music teachers and two full time drama teachers. Within each area there is a recognised head of subject.
The success of the department is based on a high degree of mutual support and collaboration, facilitated by regular meetings, shared views, aims and objectives. All staff in the department work towards providing the pupils with an enjoyable, rigorous and challenging creative opportunity.
The Arts are essential within the broad and balanced curriculum and we work towards:
- Developing the full variety of a child’s intelligence
- Developing the pupil’s capacity for creative thought and action
- Developing the pupil’s self -confidence in the use of Arts language, skills and offering the opportunity for self-expression
- Developing and deepening ‘feelings and emotions’ creatively and artistically
- Broadening understanding and exploration of values in conjunction with citizenship education.
- Developing an understanding and appreciation of cultural changes and differences
- Developing a wide variety of physical, perceptual, intellectual and critical skills
- Facilitating the use of visiting and professional artists in the enhancement of the curriculum
- Fostering a desire to investigate, question, respond and think creatively
- Developing those skills used in the Arts and other subject areas in combination and cooperation.
- Encouraging all pupils to take part in a wide variety of Arts extra-curricular activities in and out of school
