How can I improve my literacy skills?
In this area of the website you will find a number of short activities designed to help you improve specific areas of your writing. There are also top tips and strategies on how to improve both your writing and reading.
Introduction: Why should I be bothered?
Being literate means that you can access everything at school and in the world around you as fully as possible.
As you begin thinking about your future career you will realise that all aspects of life require literacy skills in one form or another. For example, your future career may involve communicating with people by email, letter, or fax, meaning you will need good writing skills in order to do your work well. Or you may need to accurately record information, vividly describe your ideas or formally write to members of the public. It may be that you need further study to get the job you really want, this often involves some sort of reading - if you go to University this will be a large part of your work towards your degree.
School is an important time in developing your literacy skills, a time when you have the people and resources around you to be able to tackle areas you need to improve and develop skills you already have. Use this time wisely.
