Languages at LCS: A Brief Overview
LCS has recently achieved a second specialism in MFL which is a significant development for the school and the department.
Years 7-9
All pupils start with French in Year 7. They are taught 4 periods a fortnight.
At the end of Year 7 pupils have to opt to study a second foreign language with a free choice from German, Spanish, Panjabi and Urdu. They study the new language four periods a fortnight and French for three periods a fortnight.
In Year 9 pupils continue with both languages, with French four periods and the second language three periods a fortnight.
Years 10-11 (GCSE)
Almost all pupils study a language to GCSE and some choose to continue with two languages to GCSE. A few pupils take study support but will have some language input as part of this. GCSE pupils have five periods a fortnight in Year 10 and 11.
Pupils have the opportunity to sit additional GCSEs in their native language if they choose.
Years 12-13 (AS/A2)
All languages are offered at A level, although Spanish as a new language at GCSE in September 2009 will not be available at A level until 2011. Lessons take place five periods a week at AS and A2.
