Empowering women isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do.

History

On March 19, 1911, a German woman named Clara Zetkin organized the very first International Women's Day. This idea was inspired by American working women, it was made to propose peace in an effort to end World War 1 as well as women’s rights. In the 1970’s, more female historians began to look back and appreciate the contributions of women in history. The concept of studying women's history continued to grow in popularity. In 1987, a group of women asked to expand the celebration. That same year, there was an entire month dedicated to women’s rights.

How is it celebrated?

The day is marked around the world with arts performances, talks, and rallies, networking events, conferences and marches. Various women, including political, community, and business leaders, as well as leading educators, inventors, entrepreneurs, and television personalities, are usually invited to speak at various events on the day. Many students in schools and other educational settings participate in special lessons, debates or presentations about the importance of women in society, their influence, and issues that affect them.

International woman’s day is a chance to celebrate achievements of women now and throughout the history of the world.
