Paul Jackson, Cheif Executive of engineering UK.

A student from Swanwick Hall School in Alfreton will be heading to the UK final of The Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Competition on March 15 and 16 after wowing judges at the regional heats.

Year 10 student Sam Faloon impressed the judges with his spherical remote controlled robot as per BB8 from Star Wars. He will go to join 200 other project teams from across the UK in the finals, which take place during the Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair at the Birmingham NEC in March. The BB Competition is on every year and is designed to recognise and reward young people’s talents and achievements in all areas of science, technology, engineering and maths, as well as noticing talents and achievements. This also helps with building confidence and skills in project based work.

The competition is open to 11 to 18 year olds, and gives the contestants the chance to compete for the top prizes of international experiences worth over £50,000 and prestigious awards such as GSK UK Young Scientists and UK Young Engineer of the Year.
