Scooter Scare

By: Scarlett

On Wednesday 15th of March a man riding a mobility scooter held up traffic and almost caused an accident with a bus on the A52. Two trucks were also forced to pull around the scooter before it went past the A52 junction. Neil Wheatley managed to record a 22 second video of a lorry breaking before it could crash into the scooter and cause lots of harm to the nearby traffic.

Wheatley and his wife, who was driving the car, made chase and tailed the scooter up Nottingham road but they had to stop because they needed to pick up their daughter from school. An event similar to this occurred in February where a man was driving his mobility scooter in the middle of the road. A picture of this incident was tweeted to the Derbyshire police by Linda Miller asking “What can be done about this sort of dangerous situation?”

A police spokesman has claimed that the police want to track down the mystery scooter man stated; “People who use mobility scooters are allowed to drive them on roads for short periods of time. What they should not do is drive on roads for extended periods, in front of buses, lorries and other vehicles, as there is clearly a very serious risk of them coming to harm.”

"It's important that we speak to the man to advise him of the dangers he may be putting himself or other road users in.” “With the scooter having no registration plate, it's difficult for us to identify the man and speak to him about his actions. However we would urge anyone who might recognise him or know someone matching his description to get in touch with us as soon as they can." Anyone with information should call the Derbyshire police using the phone number 101.
