Drone Racing Flies Through the Roof

By: Aaron

Drones were invented on February 4th 2004. The flying aircraft is sometimes fitted with a camera that can move in different directions. But these racing drones are something different.

Racing drones have lights and hold a very small camera. They come in different colours and sizes. The blades are very small and fast so you should not touch them or you will cut yourself. The blades can be removed but this is a serious choking hazard to children.

I have asked some people how they feel about drone racing. A pupil responded saying ‘geeky, nerdy but I’m a geek so I like it’. Another pupil said ‘I feel happy because it does not hurt the environment and it keeps you active and out of the house’. Another pupil said that he hear that some drones have been made by Amazon to deliver packages.

Amateur drone racing started out five years ago in Australia. The sport was created by Nick Horbaczewski who had previously been the chief revenue officer at Tough Mudder. He said to CMBC, "I had experience growing a niche sport into a major sport”.

The next drone race will be in Governors Island, New York City on August 5-6, 2017.
