Welcome to Music

Music is taught to all students in Years 7, 8 & 9 for 1 hour per week, becoming optional from year 10 upwards.  The curriculum has been carefully devised to provide a thorough grounding in basic through to advanced music skills within 3 main strands:

  • Performing and Singing
  • Creating Music
  • Understanding and Appraising

Students will study a range of develop skills and appreciation of a wide range of different musical genres as they progress through LCS, leading them prepared to study at higher levels, if they chose to. LCS Music Students have gone on to study Music at conservatoire, university and vocational level.

Within the department we have two main classrooms fully equipped with Keyboards, Ukuleles and audio equipment. We also have access to 2 state-of-the-art computer rooms where students use MIDI DAW packages and notation software.

Extra-Curricular Music is a key part of the school’s Creative Arts Faculty, which is a busy hub at the heart of the cultural life of the school. We have a reputation for high quality music-making, concerts / shows and for offering opportunities for hundreds of students on a wide variety of instruments or voice. Students have the opportunity to take part in a progressive enrichment programme and become actively involved in a range of musical groups and are encouraged to establish their own ensembles.

8 Instrumental Teachers, accredited by Derbyshire Music Partnership, teach across a broad spectrum of instruments: Brass, Drums, Guitar, Piano + Keyboard, Singing, Strings, and Woodwind. See Instrumental Music Lessons at LCS

The department enjoys excellent links with feeder primary schools, with ensembles performing concerts and workshops with KS2 pupils.
