Exam Board and Specification

Two English A Levels are offered at Littleover Community School.

The first is A Level English Literature.  This is a thoroughly interesting course in which students not only study a wide range of poetry, novels and plays, but also get to choose their own fiction texts to study as part of their coursework.  For the core texts studied, see below.

The second is A Level English Language.  In this course, a wide range of topics, from individual variation of language to the ways in which children learn to speak and write, is studied.

Year 12

  • Prose: Frankenstein.
  • Play: Doctor Faustus (or other tragedy).
  • Prose: The Handmaid’s Tale.

Year 13

  • Shakespeare play: Othello (or other tragedy).
  • Prose: War of the Worlds.
  • Poetry: Philip Larkin (or other collection).
  • Coursework: A comparison of two fiction texts.
  • Revision of topics studied in Year 12.
