LGBTQ+ - What Do You Know?
The LGBTQ+ Flag

Firstly, what does LGBTQ+ actually stand for? Some people won’t know, so:

  • L – Lesbian
  • G – Gay
  • B – Bisexual
  • T – Transgender
  • Q – Questioning/Queer
  • + – Others

How People Can Treat LGBTQ+

Do you ever give a second thought about the LGBTQ+ community? Despite lots of people support across the world, lots of others still discriminate the LGBTQ+ community for who they are. There are various reasons, the most common reason for the discrimination of the community is religion. This however is not an excuse to abuse and attack people, but it is important to respect religions and beliefs. People should be able to believe what they want and be who they are without conflict from others, this works both ways in this situation.

What the kids think

We asked some pupils from our school about the situation of the LGBTQ+ community, here’s the feedback: Sophie said,” I think it’s good that people are being accepted and they should be themselves, while not worrying about others options. I think that it’s rude that people are disrespectful to them because they’re simply just being themselves. I think gay marriages should be legal everywhere and any punishments are terrible because they can’t help what they feel. I believe that they should be who they want.” Haneyah told us, “It’s good to have the acceptance and it’s nice that there is a community where others can understand your feelings and society isn’t completely against them. Gay marriage should be legal everywhere and it’s wrong that people discriminates them and people should be able to love who they want to. People on the LGBTQ+ community have nearly completely changed their views. I have different opinions on LGBTQ+ people as my religion states I should.”

Marriage and rights

People with different sexualities and feeling should have the same right as everyone else… shouldn’t they? After all they are still people. Lots of countries still don’t agree with gay marriage or any marriages from the LGBTQ+ community. In some countries people can be even put to death in parts of Asia and Africa or life imprisonment. Thankfully the UK, US, Canada and lots of other countries allow gay marriage.

What happened in Orlando?

On the 12 of June at 2:00 am, Pulse, a gay night club, was attacked by a shooter called Omar Mateen according to officials. Mateen was killed after he took hostages in the nightclub, but it was too late for 50 people who were shot and killed on site by the Gun man himself. 53 were injured as well. But why did this have to happen? This is thought to be a terror attack, and was carried out by legally purchased firearms so it could have been due to the shooters beliefs.

What can we do?

We need to respect all people’s views even if we don’t agree with them. People who are different should be respected and supported everywhere and we all can help this happen. Protests are held for LGBTQ+ rights all over the world. PRIDE is a big event where people can express themselves freely and could be a great even for anyone to go and show their support.

Despite all the debates and conflict, love is still love!
