			Cyprus Birds Illegally Poached
A rare bird relaxing in a field.

In 2016, 1.7 million birds were illegally killed. 800,000 of these were killed in British Military Territory. The base was where most of the poaching was. Another hotspot for poaching was Cape Pyla and this is where most songbirds migrate. Nets are placed in bushes and they trap birds. The birds are then killed and pickled to be sold on the black market. Criminal gangs have earned a lot of money through doing this, and only 3 to 4 people have been arrested. Martin Harper, the conservation director of RSPB, has said to the BBC:“This report sadly highlights that the British base is the number one bird killing hotspot on the whole island of Cyprus…”

The maximum fine is 700,000 euros, but many people think it should be higher. People are criticizing Cyprus, and saying they should do more about this. What do you think?
