Our new youth mayor
An interview with Tiny

This year Khanya Simbani, also known as Tiny, has been selected as youth mayor. She is a current Year 11 pupil at LCS and has been a representative of their School Council since Year 7. She applied last year as well as this year and was delighted that her hard work finally paid off. The fact that she was denied last year clearly shows that she was even more determined to earn the role this year. She will officially become the youth mayor in April.

She want to be a lawyer and said, ‘I applied to be youth mayor because I felt like it would give me a good starting point to allow me to become a lawyer and a helper at specialist schools.’ She has also been a part of voices and actions and that gave her a good insight into being youth mayor. She says, ‘I have been a member of voices and actions for 5 years.’ The fact that she has been in groups such as school council, voices and actions etc. shows us that she really enjoys roles like this, she said herself , ‘it is really enjoyable to be a part of the school council because now I’m chair of it and also youth mayor.’ She clearly wanted this role and it must be amazing for her to finally achieve this goal of hers. Also the charity work that she does will really help her with talking and helping at specialist schools. It really sounds as though our new youth mayor is going to be fantastic.

A youth mayor is someone who is elected each year to help raise awareness of the positive ideas of young people to make sure our city hears their voices. Any young person can apply for this role as long as they: live in Derby, are between the ages of 11-19 or up to 25 if you are a disabled young person, are a member of the Voices in Action (ViA) Youth Council and have the permission of their parent/carer and school/college /training provider. Everyone at Littleover Community School is so proud of her. We think that she will do a fantastic job representing young people across the city and we are delighted she has been chosen as the new Youth Mayor.
