'Parents' for Pups

By: Scarlett

Some lucky dog fanatics had the brilliant chance to meet some of the beautiful dogs from Canine Partners - the charity that held a private party in Oakwood Community Centre on the 6th of March. This was held to provoke more people to join the force and help more puppies in need. There are a lot of trainers needed to help the dogs and there is a noticeable difference in the ratio of puppies to parents. Amidst the many puppies’ parents at the meet there was 55 year-old trainer Angela Richmond-Belle, who is currently caring for Matrix, a nine month old Labrador. She became a puppy parent in 2013 after her early retirement from training manager.

The Canine Partners charity is specialised in training future guide and assistant dogs for the disabled, they work in partnership with Help for Heroes, The Royal British Legion and many other organisations targeted with helping to provide assistance dogs to injured veterans. Canine Partners carefully select dogs for people with specific needs; some dogs are so well trained that they can remove cards for ATMs! Puppy training involves teaching the dogs about some basic abilities such as kindness, gentle nature and curiosity. They mainly work with Labradors, golden retrievers and some select cross breeds.

However, the amount of money they receive and volunteers they recruit still isn’t enough. When you donate £1 to them 78p of what you donate goes towards choosing puppies to supporting partnerships in the UK (the 22p purely goes to fundraising and generating awareness). So what are you waiting for? Why don’t you donate a pound or even assist in puppy training to help an innocent puppy in need?
