Derby’s controversial new incinerator WILL be opening in spring 2018 in spite of opposition local residents who are not looking forward to the opening day.

RRS was given the go-ahead to build the complex in October 2013, despite a long campaign opposing it by Sinfin and Spondon against Incineration (SSAIN), Friends of the Earth and local residents. As the incinerator is close to Sainsbury’s, B&Q and close to lots of houses, many believe this could harm people breathing it in, especially children if they don’t know what it is.

It is being built to help get rid of non-re-cycle able household rubbish. The sinfin plant will heat-treat non-recycle rubbish to create gas which can be burned to Produce electricity for 14,000 homes. It is part of a cost-saving plan to manage Derbyshire’s house hold waste.

“The steam is used to clean the pipe work before tests can be carried out to check the turbine is operating correctly- a process known as steam blow."

Opening plans

The development hit a major snag in July 2016 when the firm behind its power generation technology, Energos, went into administration. Despite the setback, RRS have said it remained “fully committed” to the scheme and hoped to open the complex by Spring.

Tim Heath, Interserve project director says, “The steam is used to clean the pipe work before tests can be carried out, to check the turbine is operating correctly- a process known as steam blow, which is completely harmless.”

I think it is very poor show that local residents are not being kept fully informed; Just at the moment that the plant is being tested.

Steam stimulates the sinuses

Steam stimulates the sinuses and may ease nasal congestion. In the lungs it’s likely neither good nor bad… much like breathing in a heavy fog (except for temperature) and probably not comfortable to do more than a few minutes at a time.

In February 2018 people were alarmed about the heavy smoke that came out of the incinerator and called the fire services. Simon Bacon said, who has campaigned heavily against the incinerator, “I think it is a very poor show that local residents are not being kept fully informed just at the moment that the plant is beginning to be tested.”
