Momo Mystery.
By: Zoya.
Recently many stories have been told about the Momo Challenge. It has been said that ‘Momo’ is a group or person who hacks into people’s accounts. Children often have access to their parent’s phones. Media apps do not have a setting for parental control. Because media is advertising it a lot, a child is likely to accidentally press on the app and see information about the Momo Challenge. This could then mean that they end up seeing ‘Momo’ which could frighten them.
Many parents and teachers are concerned about this. A primary school teacher stated: “I think it is outrageous that children have access to an app which not only do their parents/ carers maybe not know of but also the fact that this app has potential to take a child’s life! Recent stories have said it is a hoax but the image can still cause distress.”
Police have done recent investigations which have now lead to the Momo Challenge maybe being reported as a hoax.
An anxious parent said: “From a parents point of view I feel more security measures need to be put in place preventing children from accessing information which can cause distress like the Momo."
Many network and security people are also worried about the Momo Challenge. A person who works with this unit of work stated: “The Momo Challenge is the latest news story about an apparent online ‘challenge’ that has understandably caused many parents concern. Although there have been lots of media stories in the last week, recent investigations have found it to be fake news. Although the Momo Challenge is now being reported as a hoax, the disturbing images can still cause children distress. It is important that parents talk to their children. Parents of younger children may also want to install ‘YouTube Kids’ which is a more controlled version of YouTube.”
Mr Venkatesh the headteacher of Littleover Community School has also stated “I was concerned whether or not it was true as it could have caused harm to my pupils. Recently, I have been told it is a hoax. Now we know it is a hoax I would recommend not speaking about it.” Many people are concerned. The image should be avoided as much as possible.
