2019 cricket world cup - how the world cup started : everything you need to know
By: Hasan
This year’s cricket World Cup takes place at Lord’s Cricket Ground, London on Thursday 30 May and will end on Sunday, 14 July, but what is the history behind this prestigious and much loved sport?
The history of the World Cup is interesting as, despite its origin of the sport being English, it was held for the first time outside of England and was played in India and Pakistan, in 1989.
The first winner was the West Indies who won by 17 runs against Australia, no wonder the West Indies are so good. The next two World Cups were held by England in 1979 and 1983 and it has been going on ever since.
Australia are one of the favourites to win this year as the defending champions, but some other contenders are close behind them: England, India and New Zealand. It is hoped that England’s impressive run so far this year means that they will be able to end their World Cup draught and finally lift the trophy for the first time. However, India and New Zealand have impressive ranking so far this year, so will be fighting hard for a win.
