Year 9 Spanish students spent 3 days in Madrid from Wednesday 5th February to Saturday 8th February.

We had a fabulous time trying tapas, watching flamenco, visiting Real Madrid home stadium, Santiago Bernabeu and even meeting up face to face with our Spanish penpals at their own school!

We loved learning about Bull fighting at the Plaza de Toros and enjoyed our final afternoon in the sunshine in Madrid's beautiful Retiro Park.

All in all a fantastic trip where we spoke lots of Spanish, made friends for life and came away loving the Madrid way of life and their culture.

Friday 13th March is a Non-Uniform Day at LCS.

This event is organised by LCS School Council students. Money raised will be split between Sport Relief and WWF Australian Bushfire Relief.

LCS is hosting a 00s night in aid of the LCS Uganda Project on Friday 31st January.

The event will run from approximately 19:30 to 22:30 in the LCS Main Hall (doors open at 19:00).

The evening will focus on the music of the 2000s and will feature live performances and DJ Sets. A licensed bar will be available.

Tickets are available on the door priced at £5 each. All proceeds will go to the LCS Uganda Project 2020.

The A-level league tables were released this week by the Department for Education confirming LCS as the highest performing school in the city.

The average grade of our Year 13 students last year was a B (National average grade is C) with an average point score of 38.24 (National average is 32.87) in their best 3 A-levels which placed us as the best in the city of Derby. LCS was also ranked 1st for the % of students achieving top grades in ‘facilitator’ subjects and for the average grade in all A-levels taken. The league tables also confirmed that LCS students made good progress in the 6th Form, with a positive ‘value added’ score – the only school in the area with so many students to achieve this positive measure.

With 35% of all grades A*/A, 63% A*-B and 88% A*-C, these results are confirmed as the best in the school’s history. This is particularly encouraging as they are the first results achieved since we began to adjust our curriculum in response to recent A-level reforms which suggests that the curriculum model that we have adopted is working.

These outstanding results are a testament to the hard work and commitment of our staff and students and enabled virtually all the students to go on to their first choice universities or apprenticeships – including 9 offers from Oxford and Cambridge which was another record for the school.

LCS Headteacher Mr Venkatesh today arrived in a chauffeur driven car for his last day at LCS.

As a brass band played the tune from Mastermind (Mr Venkatesh was famously on the show, winning his heat!), Mr Venkatesh emerged from the silver car amid cheers and applause from the hundreds of LCS students and staff lining the road.

After 17 years, first as Deputy Head and then Headteacher, Mr Venkatesh will now hand over the reins of LCS to new Acting Headteacher, Mr Wilding.

The LCS community thanks Mr Venkatesh and wishes him all the best in his retirement.

Mr Venkatesh, who leaves LCS at the end of December after 17 years, has written a message of farewell to the LCS Community.

The trip is available to current LCS Year 7 to 12 pupils.

After careful consideration, we have decided to make changes to the published term dates for Academic Year 2020-21.

23rd-27th September is International Languages Week at LCS!

Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of language-based activities throughout the week including quizzes, international food sales and karaoke amongst others!

LCS will be holding our Open Day and Open Evening on Thursday 3rd October, 2019, when you and your child will have the opportunity to find out more about Littleover Community School.

Open Day

The school will be open to the public on the morning of 3rd October, between 9am and 10:45am, with the last tour taking place at 10am. Lessons will continue as usual and visitors will be able to enter classrooms and observe us at work on a normal Thursday morning. Student Guides will help to show you around and there will be a chance to ask questions and discuss what you have seen with senior staff.

Open Evening

LCS' Open Evening will be held from 5.30pm to 7.00pm on the same day. There will be a programme of continuous displays and exhibitions, together with timed events. A meeting will be held at 7.00 pm in the School Hall for parents of prospective students for September 2020.

A one-way system will be in operation during open evening and visitors should arrive via the Pastures Hill entrance and leave through the bottom exit on Fresco Drive. There will be limited parking on site but if you can avoid arriving by car, this would be advisable.

LCS would like to invite you to attend our 6th Form Open Evening on Tuesday 22nd October 2019 from 5.45pm to 7.30pm. This event will take place in S Block and the Sports Hall.

As well as having the opportunity to visit different subject stalls and the purpose-built 6th Form block there will also be two separate formal presentations both covering issues such as entry requirements, the application process, expectations, ethos and facilities. These identical presentations will commence at 5.45pm and 6.30pm (you will only need to attend one of these).

You will also have the opportunity to talk to current students. 

Prospectuses including details of how to apply, course content and organisation will be available on the evening and also via the school website after this date.

This is not a ticketed event, please just turn up at your convenience between the times mentioned above ensuring that you try to make one of the presentations at 5.45pm or 6.30pm where possible.

Congratulations to all LCS Year 13 students who received their A Level results today.

Littleover Community School is celebrating its best ever A level results. Over a third of grades were A*-A and nearly 2 thirds of grades were A*-B with 87% of grades being C or above. The average grade was a B. These results are a significant improvement on last year and represent a fantastic achievement for our students and it is great to see the hard work of students and staff rewarded.

Over half of students achieved at least one grade A with 80% of students achieving at least one grade B or above. 2 students achieved 4 A* grades and 4 students achieved 3 A* grades with 17% of students achieving 3 or more A*/A grades. Nearly half of all students achieved three Bs or better and the overall pass rate is 100%.

Although the number of high grades is very pleasing and enables a large number of students to access the most competitive universities, courses and apprenticeships, it is important to note that there are many students throughout the ability range who have, through sheer hard work as well as natural ability, matched or exceeded their target grades, and all deserve congratulations for their achievements.

Charity Week 2019 raised a total of £4184.40. The money will be split between the Child Africa Uganda project, CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) and Mind (a mental health charity). Thank you for your support!

The Child Africa Uganda Project is a charity that funds a school in a poverty-ridden area of Uganda where they would usually have to pay for an education. Our school raises money to help those children, builds new sustainable facilities and provides the children with clothing. 

CRY stands for Cardiac Risk in the Young, this charity prevents young. sudden cardiac deaths through awareness, screening, and research as well as supporting affected families.

Mind is a charity that provides advice and support to empower anyone experiencing mental health problems, which is a growing problem within young people.

Our recently updated safeguarding section on the LCS website has a great deal of useful information for anyone requiring advice or support during the school holidays.

This section contains preparation material for a variety of subjects, as well as the presentation shown during the Sixth Form induction days.

During E-safety week, Key Stage 3 pupils will be using their Computing lessons to focus on E-Safety in the modern age. Whilst all aspects of internet use and electronic devices are covered, we feel our priority this year is the use of social media. To raise the profile of E-Safety, there are a number of competitions for students to enter and they will attend dedicated whole year group assemblies.

In order to help facilitate students’ understanding, we would encourage parents to become involved and engage in conversation with your children on this matter. It is clearly important, but we do need to emphasise the awareness of issues that could arise, both in school, at home and socially with friends.

From 6th - 8th February 2019, 39 Year 9 students and 4 members of staff spent 3 days in Madrid. We were very lucky with the weather, and we certainly made the most of our Spanish experience!

As soon as we arrived we began our Spanish adventure. Due to our early flight from Liverpool airport we were all very hungry and tired by the time we arrived at our hotel! That didn’t stop us from eating tapas and watching a real-life Flamenco show at the famous Villa Rosa. ¡Olé!

We spent the next day brushing up on our Spanish with our pen pals in our partner school in Madrid, ‘IES Santa Eugenia’. Students spent time playing bilingual games with their pen pals and attending lessons in Spanish! Afterwards we headed to Madrid Zoo and finished off the day at the home to Real Madrid, doing the Santiago Bernabéu stadium tour.

The following morning we enjoyed our typical Spanish breakfast at the hotel and headed out via Metro to Las Ventas, for our guided bullring arena tour.

After an exhausting morning we headed back to the hotel to collect our luggage and get ready for the flight home to Liverpool.

All in all, we all really enjoyed our Spanish adventure in the capital, made lots of life-long friends, tried lots of new things and practised lots of Spanish!
