Update from Mr Wilding - 11th March 2024

Mr Wilding has sent an update to parents and carers regarding recent student achievements, information from the local police and OFSTED, Ramadan and Term Dates.

To all parents/carers

My update today includes some news about the achievements of our brilliant students, as well as some links and information I have been asked to share with you, from our local Police and OFSTED.

Chemistry Olympiad

On 25 January, 14,915 students (Y12 and 13) from 1,025 schools across the country took part in the Chemistry Olympiad Challenge. The 2024 paper covered topics such as the composition of the FIFA 2023 Women's World Cup trophy, iodate salts, fuel-producing bacteria, the MRI contrast agent gadopiclenol and sulfur-containing molecules in the atmosphere.

This year, LCS students have achieved a record number of awards, at Bronze, Silver and Gold level.

eScooters

I have been asked to share with all parents and carers on behalf of Derbyshire Police. Contrary to what some people may believe, the law has not changed on eScooters and they cannot legally be ridden on a public road, cycle-path or pavement. EScooters should not be used by LCS students on their way to/from school, on this basis.

Clear Mind Derby

As well as the attached information about eScooters, you will also find below a summary of support available from Clear Mind Derby, an organisation offering support for adults with issues surrounding mental health and housing/living conditions.

For more details about the services Clear Mind Derby Can offer, please also visit their website at https://www.clearmind-cic.co.uk/

OFSTED 'Big Listen'

OFSTED have recently launched their 'Big Listen' consultation. Please see below, from their launch information:

The Big Listen is an opportunity for us to hear from the professionals we work with, like teachers and other educators, carers, employers and social workers, and the people we work for: parents, carers, children and learners.

Our consultation asks about:

  • how we report inspection findings
  • how we carry out inspections
  • how we can have a positive impact on the sectors we inspect
  • what we need to do to be a world-class inspectorate and regulator, trusted by parents, children and the sectors we work with

Parents/Carers wishing to contribute to this consultation can do so until 31st May 2024, at the address below:

Ramadan

Many of our students will begin the month of Ramadan this week, which will culminate in the festival of Eid, around 10th April. I would like to wish Eid Mubarak to all our students, parents and carers observing Ramadan over the next month.

Term Dates

A reminder that Spring Term finishes on Thursday 28th March, at the usual time of 3pm. Students return for the start of Summer Term on Monday 15th April.

The DfE have recently announced changes to the law on school attendance, with effect from September 2024. Changes include a rise in fines for parents/carers of students with low attendance, or that choose to take children out of school for holidays during term time.

I will share the link to the full list of changes in my next update, but please remember that all our term dates for 2023-24 and 2024-25 can be found below:

Thank you for your continued support of our school, our students and our staff.

Keep safe.

Update from Mr Wilding - 1st March 2024

Update from Mr Wilding - 1st March 2024

Mr Wilding has sent an update to parents and carers regarding attendance awards, vaping, the White Ribbon Campaign, mobile phones in school and the University of Derby Saturday club.

To all parents/carers

Good afternoon, from LCS.

I hope this latest update finds you all well. I have a few brief items to draw your attention to today and, as always, I am grateful for your attention and time.

Vape

Thank you to all parents and carers for the feedback I have received after my recent message regarding vaping. We are continuing to address this issue in school and you may have seen my colleague Jenny Brown from Derby Cathedral School on BBC News today, discussing the work we are doing together as schools across the city to tackle the problem.

I would again emphasise that there are not large numbers of students vaping at LCS and that we have the situation well under control. There is also no clear evidence of any other substances such as THC being in school, but I wanted to raise this as a concern with parents and carers, to prevent a potential escalation of this issue.

Your ongoing support on this matter is greatly appreciated.

Attendance award

I am very pleased to inform all parents and carers that LCS has received 2 Attendance Awards for Autumn Term 2023, from the Fischer family Trust (FFT).
These Awards are for schools whose attendance was in the top 10% or top 25% of all similar FFT schools, across the country.

School attendance remains one of the strongest factors in students' achievement and progress in school, both socially and academically, and we have always worked hard, together with students, parents and carers, to ensure our students attend school regularly.

I would like to thank all parents and carers for your support and for continuing to work with us on this issue.

A message from Munti Muntasir – Derby Youth Mayor

Earlier this year, upon the recommendation of the High Sheriff of Derbyshire, I submitted an application to nominate our White Ribbon Campaign for the National Crimebeat Awards 2024.

The National Crimebeat Awards are primarily governed by current and former High Sheriffs (representatives of the Sovereign and ensure proper judicial law and order is maintained in their county) who aim "to give recognition to the most innovative and successful crime prevention projects carried out by young people". Spanning across England and Wales, the awards aim to celebrate the success and capabilities of our young people to take initiative and demonstrate key skills such as leadership and reciprocity.

Therefore, I am delighted to announce that we have been shortlisted as one of the 6 finalists for the awards! This means that the young people involved with the campaign will be invited to London to present it to the judges and receive their allocated awards during the awards ceremony.

We have been tasked with producing a 7-minute presentation to showcase our campaign which will be judged and a prize of £500 will be awarded to the winners. Then the winners of the overall competition will be announced shortly after with a top prize of £2,000.

Afterwards, we will be treated to some lunch and a tour of the main sites of London with the opportunity to go on the London Eye.

This is a key moment of celebration for the ability of our young people in Derby so we should all be proud of this achievement to have, at least, come this far. We look forward to the coming weeks and will announce the winners accordingly.

Let's bring it home to Derby!
Best,
Munti

Further information about the National Crimebeat Awards can be found on their website at https://www.national-crimebeat.com/

Mobile Phones in schools

You will no doubt have seen recent national publicity around new government guidance on Mobile Phone use in schools. This new guidance for schools is designed to help implement and maintain policies that prohibit the use of Mobile Phones throughout the school day.

Our policy on Mobile Phones at LCS has always been the same and we have never allowed students to have or use mobile phones in school, unless they are in Sixth Form. Therefore, on this basis, there is no change to our current stated position or policy on this issue.

I would respectfully request the continued support of all parents and carers on this matter, as student use of mobile phones and access to social media through mobile phones remains one of the biggest challenges we are facing in schools across the country.

University of Derby Saturday Club

As we have advertised to students, parents and carers in the past, our friends at The University of Derby are once again running their successful Saturday Club programme, with the first session being tomorrow, March 2nd.

The club is open to all students from 13 to 16 years old and further information can be found on the Saturday Club website, at the address below;

https://saturday-club.org/club/university-of-derby/

Thank you for your continued support of our school, our staff and students.

Keep safe.

About LCS

Mr Wilding - LCS Acting Headteacher

Welcome to Littleover Community School.

I am lucky enough to have worked at the school since September 2000 and, in January 2020, was asked by Governors to take on the role of Acting Headteacher.  Having now been confirmed as permanent Headteacher in March 2021, I will continue to do everything I can to make LCS the best school it can possibly be, whilst maintaining the safety and wellbeing of all our young people.

We are a large comprehensive secondary school, located to the south west of the City of Derby, close to the main transport routes of the A38 and A50. We pride ourselves on the excellent teaching we provide for all our students, as well as the care and support all students receive to help them achieve their best.

We are committed to a broad and balanced curriculum and our students have achieved outstanding results at both GCSE and A Level for many years now. We also believe in providing all our students with wider opportunities for learning and developing through their work in the classroom, as well as access to extra-curricular opportunities in sport and performing arts.

I hope you find our website informative and easy to use.  We are always happy to receive ideas of how we can improve our service to parents, carers, students and our community.

If you have any ideas or questions about anything on our website, or more widely about the school, please do not hesitate to contact us.  If you would like a paper copy of our school brochure or paper copies of any of the information contained on our website, these are also available, free of charge.
