I am writing to update you on the events which have taken place at Littleover Community School over the past fortnight and to share information about upcoming events.
We have enjoyed Languages Week, where students from different year groups were involved in a range of activities to broaden their understanding and love of different languages. We were fortunate enough to have visiting speakers from the Business Language Champions’ organisation; they worked with some of our Year 11 students on an ‘International space challenge’; afterwards we received a letter of thanks, remarking upon the exemplary conduct of our students.
Additionally, our KS3 students had the opportunity to engage in wider reading and share their views and thoughts about their chosen books with staff members as part of our KS3 reading week.
Within our Sixth Form, over seventy of our Year 12 and 13 students have signed up to be 6th Form Ambassadors, hoping to represent the school at various events. A number of our students were also lucky enough to hear from a former student, who was providing advice about making successful medical applications and preparation for the medical degree entrance exams.
Finally, most of our Year 11 cohort were out on their Work Experience placements last week and we have had fantastic feedback about the professionalism and conscientiousness of our students. It can be a nerve-wracking experience stepping into the world of work and our students have risen to the challenge. Again, we are grateful for the work completed by the PSHE and Careers department to provide students with this opportunity and to parents for supporting their children with this experience.
A couple of reminders regarding school protocols
Parents and carers should not be driving onto school site, unless they have permission from a member of staff and this includes afterschool when picking up children from afterschool clubs. Please agree with your child, as you would at the end of a day without additional provision, a pick-up location which is off school site. This may have been unclear to the parents of our Year 7 students, so hopefully this will provide some clarity.
I would like to draw your attention to the Local Authority information about ‘School attendance for parents’ which outlines the school’s position on attendance and what constitutes authorised and unauthorised absence. Last year, the school made gains in terms of improving attendance and we want to continue to build on this success, which means we want our students in school and learning. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated. School attendance information for parents - Derby City Council
